Life in Long Lake, NY
Long Lake is a lovely small town in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state. In the summer, it is invaded by tourists who boost the livelihood and incomes of the locals, many of whom are unemployed much of the remainder of the year.
Tourism is a double-edged sword. After falling in love with this vacationland, many find home prices "cheap" here. They become second-home buyers or build retirement homes and pay more than local families can afford. Therefore, prices are high and local workers can't afford to buy. Rentals are scarce.
In the winter, it can be as quiet as the blanket of white that covers it. There may be the sound of snowmobiles from time to time. They bring a bit of joy to those who enjoy this sport and a little business to those businesses that stay open and struggle through the winter.
Winter can be beautiful. It provides a chance to get a NYS Department of Conservation ticket for feeding deer that steal from bird feeders. If the snow is good and the ice is decent, children slide and skate at Mount Sabattis Recreation Area in the center of town.
We are fortunate to have a nice parcel of land. We use our tractor if the weather permits or a snowmobile and attached sled to gather firewood.
